The pink palace of Drumlanrig in the Scottish lowlands.

Drumlanrig Castle is situated on the Queensberry Estate in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The castle is the Dumfriesshire home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

The 'Pink Palace' of Drumlanrig, constructed between 1679 and 1689 from distinctive pink sandstone, is an example of late 17th-century Renaissance architecture. The first Duke of Queensberry, William Douglas, had the castle built on the site of an ancient Douglas stronghold overlooking the Nith Valley. The castle has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and four towers.

In 1984, aerial photography revealed the outline of a substantial Roman fort some 350 yards to the southeast of Drumlanrig Castle. The fort was partially excavated in 2004 by the Time Team television programme.

When I was there the castle itself was closed but the gardens were still a feast to walk in. Although you can see that once a French style garden was a lot larger than the one now. But in those days they had like 25 gardeners and of course that is now way too expensive to maintain.

There is a lady's garden and according to my Scottish friend that was a part of the garden only the lady of the house was allowed in and she were not to be disturbed there.

The castle offers nice refreshment at the local teashop and that comes very in handy as it is located in a very rural area with only small hamlets around and situated on a large estate.

I can certainly recommend visiting. Not that far from it is a ruin of another castle.
